Not the best, but I’ll mention Harry Harrison, just because I want the Stainless Steel Rat TV series. No need to be loyal to the books, just a good space-thief-forced-into-being-a-space-cop series is all I need.
RAH, RAH, RAH!!! Robert A Heinlein. As a young adolescent I found I will fear no evil and then I went through the entire school library. Once finished there I turned to the city library then bookstores, both new and used. I learned of his non-de-plume and ran those to ground. In the 80s I was in the US Navy and rode fast attack submarines. We pulled into port somewhere in the Pacific and I trotted off to the facility that loaned test equipment and under the glass-top counter was the obituary for Mr Heinlein. Kinda took the wind outta my sails so to speak Haven’t thought about that in a very very long time.
Frank Herbert created Arrakis which is one of the most vividly captured and recognized imaginary worlds of all time. I’d argue it beats out both Middle Earth and Rama.
@peabs007 It’s painful Herbert’s not on the list. Even his non-Dune books are pretty good, but in Dune, you have unparalleled world building. Plans within plans within plans, indeed.
There’s nothing in current sci-fi that comes close.
Issac was and still is a Human Resource
No love for Arthur C. Clarke?
@RiotDemon there’s a lot of authors I’d added, but as for surprised at not seeing already, it’s a coin toss between him and Heinlein.

Ray Bradbury not a contender?
@embedit No.
So many good ones, but of course it is Robert Heinlein.
@2many2no Did you know about his new book, ‘The Pursuit of the Pankera’ ?
@OldCatLady Not until now, and that is very cool.
@2many2no Yup
