The nobleman strode into the studio with an air of entitlement. “So this is it! This is where the famous Leonardo da Vinci works on his various masterpieces!”

“Sir,” da Vinci said, putting down his painting supplies. “To what do I owe the honor?”

“Well, my gallery was feeling a bit stale,” said the nobleman, “so I decided to drop by and see if you had anything with which I might freshen it up.”

“Well, I actually do have a few new pieces,” da Vinci said, motioning the nobleman to come near. “Behold!”

The nobleman stood beside Leonardo, trying to understand what he was looking at. “But what are they?” he said at last.

“Creatures,” da Vinci said.

“Real creatures?”

“No,” da Vinci said. “They’re not real. I’ve made them up. The way I imagine it is that they’re creatures that humans pit against each other in epic contests.”

“Hmmm,” said the nobleman.

“So,” said da Vinci, “will you be wanting one of them? For your gallery?”

“No,” said the nobleman.

Leonardo lowered his head. “I understand, sir.”

“I mean, I won’t be wanting just one of them,” said the nobleman. “I will be wanting every one of them! And it shan’t be of concern how much they cost!”

“Really?” da Vinci said. “All of them?”

“Yes,” said the nobleman. “There’s just something strange. When I look at them, I am overtaken by a desire to collect them all!”
