Calm Down

Remain calm, the commander had said. We’ll be there soon.

But when?

Because it had been some time since the explosion that severed the astronaut’s line, sending him hurtling out into the great unknown, and he was starting to panic.

“Computer,” he said. “I’m really starting to freak out here. What do you have that can calm me down?”

He hoped for some aromatherapy, or maybe a drip of something more potent to settle his nerves. Instead, his in-suit computer said, “Loading guided meditation module.”

A moment later, his ears were filled with soft, new-age-y music.

“Imagine yourself,” said a soothing voice, “entirely weightless.”

“Not hard,” said the astronaut.

“Imagine yourself,” said the soothing voice, “floating through space.”

“Again,” said the astronaut, “not really a struggle for me right now.”

“Imagine all of your worldly possessions thousands of miles away,” said the soothing voice.

the astronaut looked at the tiny speck off in the distance that was his home planet. “Can do.”

“Imagine yourself removing the mask you wear at all times,” said the soothing voice.

“No way,” said the astronaut. “I’d die.”

“Breath in deep,” said the soothing voice.

“Don’t want to deplete my oxygen stores,” said the astronaut. “You know what, computer, maybe let’s try something else. A distraction. Like something to watch?”

The view of space faded as the computer turned on his visor’s internal screen.

“Loading film Gravity,” said the computer.

“Oh, come on!” cried the astronaut.

Meditation by Tobias Fonseca

Are these designs illustrative of Tobe Fonseca’s creative process? Like, when it’s time to design a rad new shirt, does he sit down on the floor in the middle of his studio in São Francisco de Paula and meditate until the beautiful ideas flow from him like the flowers pictured here? And does he wear a full space suit while he does it? Because that would be pretty cool.

You know what else would be pretty cool? Checking out Tobe Fonseca’s website to see more of his excellent designs!
