I had to look up what a abacus was lol. It’ll be 20 years next year for me, and the sad thing is I knew what an abacus was when I was in school. If you don’t use it, you loose it.
@RiotDemon@TomSeward
Now that I don’t work and read like I used to bc of neck injury my spelling has gotten really bad which is sad. To much boob tube. My neck starts to hurt within a half hour of reading so I never get anywhere. I’m miss it, it was a great escape.
@RiotDemon@Star2236 lol, I ‘retired’ after my 5th stroke, but as a manager in the oilfield I dealt with thousands of tons of material, and millions of gallons of fluids a week. I too miss it, but after the spending the past 6 years with my wife and still getting paid (for another 9 years), life is great!
@TomSeward
Abacuses are still used in many third-world countries. And they’ve been proven to be more efficient than using a calculator 2/3s of the time. No shame in using one.
@DVDBZN@TomSeward Back when I used to travel a lot to some “less advanced” countries, I was astounded by how fast the ladies tabulating groceries could fly through calculations.
When I was in school, I’d say they were very good. It’s been a long time since I’ve been in school though. I use very basic math nowadays.
@RiotDemon
Was just gonna day the same thing
@RiotDemon @Star2236 It’s been 39 years since I finished high school… My kids say that we used an abacus!

I am so old we used rocks to count
@cannedpoo If it makes you feel better, the word “calculus” refers to counting with pebbles.

I never stopped counting on my fingers. I just learned to hide it better.
All you who commented are so awesome! Now I don’t feel so bad. Thanks.
