Mommy Issues

Mothers seem to have this key role in horror fiction. Moreso than fathers, at least.

There’s all this responsibility put on the mothers, their distinct presence in the story. Their iconic, murderous sons? Just vessels they have filled with baggage to a point that they spill over onto whatever town they inhabit.

I don’t want to get into spoilers, but honestly, the shirts themselves are basically spoilers, right? If you’re looking at them, considering buying them, reading this whole spiel, then you’re familiar with the plot of some of these movies. Or you don’t really care about the plot and think the shirts just look cool, which, hey, more power to you.

Mother Bates! So possessive and controlling of her son that it became reciprocal, and when she got in a relationship in spite of keeping her son from having relationships, well, things got a little murder-y. Gone, but not forgotten. Mostly because she’s living rent free in Norman’s noggin. In a way, it is her ghost that commits all them murders.

Mother Voorhees! Lovely woman. Great cook. When her precious baby boy drowns at camp one year, though, all she’s serving up is cold cuts from then on. Like, actual cuts, not the meat. Jason became the icon for the series, but she ran so that he could fly.

Mother Loomis! Cut from a similar cloth to Voorhees, except the mother-son murder-spree chronologies are swapped. While Billy started things off, she would be the one to try to end it. Yessiree, both Voorhees and Loomis are motivated by the loss of their precious little boys, and both of these women were in some way related to those boys’ own mayhem.

To the horror mothers, we salute you. While you might not be the face on the box, you were the true stars, in one way or another.

Mothers of All Monsters by krittikae

Krittakae has made some sweet tributes to horror movie mothers right here. Why? Perhaps she feels like a kindred spirit. She’s married, she has (dog) children, she lives in Texas… Pretty sure that last one is a big contributing factor to horror mother-fication. Maybe there aren’t that many similarities after all. Whatever the reason, we appreciate these symbols of completely normal and unconcerning motherly love. Wanna appreciate some more fine Krittakae art? Check out her Insta, Twitter, and Facebook!
